FUNCTION OF STUDENT COUNCIL AT EDGEWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL

The Student Council, at Edgewood Middle School, is organized to provide for the student leadership in the development of good citizenship. The Student Council is the one organization that should be representative of all student groups in the school; however, it should never be thought of as the governing body. The council is a group of students elected by their peers who represent a given constituency. The constituency is so worked out that every student in the school will have a voice in student affairs through representation.

It should be kept in mind that the Student Council always works in concert with students, staff, administration, and the community. The Student Council in NOT a “telling” group, rather it is a “showing” group. The Student Council sets the pace, provides the example, registers approval and disapproval, rewards positive action and admonishes negative action, and always respects the dignity of every individual.

The Student Council of Edgewood Middle School must constantly keep in mind that it is representative of all students, and it must continually seek more satisfactory ways of serving them. The obligation to support every student and his/her feeling that he/she is a part of the student body, and that he/she is important to its successful operation is, nevertheless, a most basic one, and the Council must NOT settle for less.

In summary, the Student Council can expect to achieve its purposes only when it is democratically administered and efficiently organized. The Student Council is an important instrument of education when its purposes are clearly stated, clearly understood, and in harmony with the goals of education.
